National Indigenous Visual Arts Action Plan unveiled

The Australian Government has released the National Indigenous Visual Arts Action Plan, outlining its five year strategy to work with and support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visual arts sector.

The initiative promotes sustainable growth, access to new markets and capacity building, while providing a framework to protect artists’ intellectual property and cultural interests.

The sector has demonstrated its adaptability and resilience through the COVID-19 pandemic. The Action Plan lays a path forward of investment in professional and digital capacity, Indigenous art centre infrastructure, and a sustainable, high-impact market in Australia and beyond.

The Action Plan will also see the national rollout of digital labelling and engagement with Indigenous communities to explore certification trademarks and legislation to protect intellectual property.

Following extensive industry consultation, the initiative will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, in art centres and working independently, to continue growing their artistic, cultural and business endeavours.
