National OECMs Framework Consultation Now Open

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

We are seeking feedback on the draft National Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) Framework.

Through our Nature Positive work, we are protecting and conserving more of what’s precious. This includes the Australian Government’s national target to protect and conserve 30% of land by 2030, referred to as the ’30 by 30 target’.

As OECMs deliver effective long-term conservation of biodiversity, recognition of these areas will help Australia to meet this national target.

The draft National OECMs Framework proposes:

  • principles and information on how they will be implemented including minimum requirements to guide OECM recognition
  • a site assessment tool.

The framework will ensure high-quality conserved areas are recognised in Australia. It has been developed by Australian, state and territory governments.

The final National OECMs Framework will complement Australia’s Strategy for the National Reserve System, which underpins our efforts to protect our native species, ecosystems, cultural values and unique landscapes for future generations.

Have your say on the draft framework by 11:59pm 17 April 2024. Your feedback will inform the final National OECMs Framework.
