National Weather Forecast: Warming Up In South-east

David here to take a look with you at the weather for tomorrow, Saturday, September 12th. And we’ll take a look ahead at Sunday’s weather as well, September 13th.

Let’s take a look at the national map to start with. And the pattern’s been evolving really slowly this week, with this high-pressure system dominating the weather across southern Australia for several days now. It’s very slowly moving out into the Tasman Sea.

Tomorrow that means temperatures will pick up a little through much of south-eastern Australia. It’s also extending this ridge still up the Queensland coast, which is still bringing showers, pretty fresh winds to that part of the country. We’ll see this cold front move through south-western WA as well, early tomorrow, and then into the south-east later in the day as it weakens.

And lastly, this trough of low pressure, which has been driving showers and thunderstorms through the week for eastern parts of Western Australia, that’s starting to weaken. So there’s still a few showers and thunderstorms around tomorrow, but not nearly as much as we’ve seen so far this week.

So let’s start in Queensland now. And you can see the showers coming ashore here in that south-easterly trade flow. Winds are starting to back off a little through the southern half of the east coast. But north of about Mackay, we still have those pretty fresh south-easterly winds with showers along the coast and then moving inland during the day.

Temperatures a couple of degrees below average still for all the cities and towns along the east coast. So, Brisbane with a shower or two and 23 °C, Cairns a top of 27 °C forecast there and a little warmer as you head further west, as is typical.

Now for New South Wales and the ACT, you’ll see that high-pressure system move out into the Tasman Sea. So, we’ll see plenty of sunshine and settled conditions for Sydney and southwards and west as well into western New South Wales, where temperatures are reaching up into the high 20s tomorrow.

So we’re really starting to warm up through New South Wales and we’ll see that story repeat through the south-eastern states as well. A couple of showers still around the north coast and slightly cooler temperatures there with the onshore easterly winds continuing.

Sydney, a cloud clearing and a top of 21 °C. Canberra also a top of 21 °C and mostly sunny there.

For Victoria, as I said, it’s going to be a similar story. Plenty of sunshine around Victoria tomorrow, temperatures reaching up in the mid 20s up through the Mallee and most centres getting up above 20 °C as well. So, Melbourne, a partly cloudy top of 22 °C tomorrow. A really pleasant day for Victoria, as it will be for Tasmania.

Temperatures several degrees above the September average, pretty much right across Tasmania, with that northerly flow extending over the island state. Hobart a sunny top of 19 °C. Launceston going for 21 °C tomorrow. Dry and plenty of sunshine across Tasmania during Saturday.

Similar story for South Australia. Quite warm temperatures as the winds start to come down from the interior. So, Adelaide, a mostly sunny, top of 24 °C, and you can see the temperatures climb up into the mid to high 20s and even the low 30s as we get up into the north-east pastoral district there. In South Australia we’ll also see a few showers and maybe a couple of thunderstorms around the very far west of the state there in the afternoon.

One or two of those thunderstorms could become severe with damaging winds and large hail. That’s just very much around that far west coast there, out past Fowlers Bay on the Nullarbor Plain.

For Western Australia, we’ll see this cold front move across the south-west capes in the very early hours of tomorrow morning, and then you’ll see it continue mainly along the south coast during the course of tomorrow, weakening as it goes.

So, rainfall maybe sort of 3 mm to 8 mm for parts of the south-west. Totals drop off as you get north of about Mandurah, and totals drop off as well as you get further east and further inland.

So just a pretty weak front clipping the coast tomorrow. We’ll see, again, a few of those showers and thunderstorms through the Eucla and parts of the far south-east tomorrow. Again with severe thunderstorms possible as per over the border. Damaging winds and large hail, if one of those thunderstorms gets strong enough to become severe.

For Perth a top of 21 °C, you’ll see some showers move through the city around 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. tomorrow morning, and then a dry day to follow that, with cool winds coming off the ocean from the west in Perth.

And up north again, very similar to Friday’s weather, a couple of showers about the Gulf Coast and north-east Arnhem Land through the late morning and afternoon particularly, but pretty much dry for the rest of the Northern Territory.

Darwin going for a sunny top of 34 °C. And looking ahead to Sunday’s weather now, very similar conditions generally.

See that high move just a little further into the Tasman, so the warmer air will extend more properly across south-eastern Australia. Trade flow continues along the Queensland coast, so showers there, with Brisbane a top of 24 °C and Cairns 27 °C.

Sydney, a sunny 23 °C. Canberra 22 °C. Melbourne 23 °C, a dry day and then maybe some showers at night time. Hobart mostly sunny, 22 °C.

Adelaide 22 °C with a few showers at times during the day. Perth a cloudy top of 21 °C and Darwin a sunny top of 35 °C for your Sunday.
