NDS welcomes the recent announcement that from 1 May 2019, the Building Code of Australia will require that accessible adult change facilities are provided in specified public buildings, including large shopping centres and airports. This amendment is the result of several years of sustained campaigning by Changing Places and other disability advocates, including NDS.
Accessible adult change facilities are sanitary facilities that contain a toilet, adult-sized change table and a ceiling track hoist based on the Changing Places Technical Standard design. These facilities assist people with high support needs, their families and carers to more easily participate in the community, giving them access to public toilet facilities that are taken for granted by the rest of the population.
