Older South Australians on the public housing waitlist have a new place to call home as construction of a $9.6 million Marshall Liberal Government apartment building is now complete, supporting vital jobs and our most vulnerable.
Construction on the three-storey 29 apartment building in South Plympton began in early 2020, specifically designed and built for tenants aged 55 years or older.
All but two apartments are tenanted or allocated, including nine South Australians from the Category 1 register – the most urgent category.
Minister for Human Services Michelle Lensink said the new apartments catered for particularly vulnerable South Australians.
“Given that more than half of Housing SA tenants are aged 55 years or older, it is critical we cater for this group and ensure properties remain liveable as tenants age,” said Minister Lensink.
“Not only are we delivering new, safe and stable homes for vulnerable South Australians, this $9.6 million development provided a shot-in-the-arm for the construction industry, supporting vital jobs at this time.
“This is the third lot of public housing apartments we’ve delivered for this particular cohort and in doing so, our aim is to reduce social isolation and help older South Australians develop a sense of community.
“The communal areas in the building’s design make it easier for people to gather together and encourage socialising, potentially reducing the social isolation many people can feel when they live on their own.”
The new building also features 1,000sqm of green space on the ground level to create a place for residents to have family visits, or for residents to socialise with each other. Two lifts make access easy and ground floor spaces are available to charge gophers to encourage mobility.
