New Batik Air Malaysia connecting Auckland to Western Australia

  • New direct Batik Air Malaysia service to boost tourism from New Zealand
  • Additional six flights per week to bring extra 56,000 visitors to WA per year
  • Second direct air service to connect Perth and New Zealand
  • New carrier to drive visitation through increased fare competition

An extra 56,000 New Zealanders can now fly direct to Western Australia with a new service offering additional flights between Auckland and Perth.

Batik Air Malaysia is the second direct air service to connect Perth to New Zealand and will operate six flights per week as part of a continuation of the airline’s Kuala Lumpur to Perth service.

Supported by the WA Government and in partnership with Perth Airport, the new direct route affirms Perth’s status as Australia’s Western Gateway and it will inject more than 112,000 seats into the market each year.

New Zealand is WA’s third largest visitor market, with more than 51,000 visitors travelling to our State for the year ending March 2023, injecting $96 million into the economy.

Additionally, 58 per cent of all New Zealanders travelling to WA are visiting friends and family, as roughly 75,000 Kiwis call our State home.

Since the pandemic, the WA Government has secured 14 direct aviation connections for WA, including new flights between Perth and Jakarta, Japan and Rome.

As stated by Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti:

“We’re really proud to support this new direct flight, which offers tourists more choice for travel between New Zealand and Western Australia.

“Additional routes for this market will make flight prices more competitive and allow even more New Zealanders to come and discover WA and all it has to offer.

“Welcoming more visitors and family members from New Zealand will only further boost our State’s tourism industry and further cements Perth’s status as the Western Gateway to Australia.”
