Four new biosecurity legislative instruments have been published on the Federal Register of Legislation and commence on 1 October 2026.
The new instruments are:
- Biosecurity Regulations 2026
- Biosecurity (Movements between Parts of Australian Territory) Declaration 2026
- Biosecurity (Exposed Conveyances Exempt from Biosecurity Control) Determination 2026
- Biosecurity (Reportable Biosecurity Incidents) Determination 2026
The new instruments include regulatory improvements, updated biosecurity measures, the removal of outdated requirements, and minor drafting updates.
The new instruments replace the corresponding 2016 instruments, which repeal on 1 October 2026.
The new instruments support the continued operation of Australia’s biosecurity system and strengthen the legislative framework that helps protect Australia’s economy, environment and agricultural industries from biosecurity risks.
