A one-lane timber bridge on the boundary of the City of Logan and the Scenic Rim is set to make way for a higher more flood-resistant structure.
Teese Bridge, at Veresdale Scrub, will be replaced with a two-lane concrete crossing that will provide a more reliable connection for motorists.
The Australian Government has committed $700,000 under the Bridges Renewal Program to this $1.7 million project, with the remainder jointly funded by the Logan City Council and Scenic Rim Regional Council.
The works will be carried out by contractor McIlwain Civil Engineering and anticipated to take about five months.
The crossing will be closed for the duration of the work and traffic diversions put in place.
Local residents, who may be impacted by the works, have been notified.
Logan’s City Infrastructure Chair Councillor Teresa Lane said Council was committed to reducing the impact of floods on City of Logan’s road network.
“Council, with help from both levels of government, has embarked on an extensive drive to raise and improve drainage on major roads in New Beith and Greenbank and other flood prone areas,” Cr Lane said.
“This latest bridge replacement will mean a safer journey for residents and visitors.”
Logan’s Division 9 Councillor Scott Bannan said flooding of Teese Bridge had long frustrated local residents.
“Veresdale Scrub School parents often see their kids miss out on school because they can’t get through after rain,” Cr Bannan said.
“Widening the bridge makes sense as we consider future growth in the local area.”
Scenic Rim’s Division 2 Councillor Jeff McConnell said the Teese Bridge replacement was a critical step in Council’s long-term transport management for the Veresdale and Gleneagle areas.
“Further improvements to Veresdale Scrub Road were identified in Scenic Rim Regional Council’s recently adopted 10 Year Capital Program, and for planning purposes, their proposed delivery is in 2023-24 and 2024-25,” Cr McConnell said.
“We are grateful to both the Australian Government and Logan City Council in sharing the funding of this significant project.”
