Western Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Geoff McKechnie APM, has announced the appointment of a new commander to Orana Mid-Western Police District.
Superintendent Daniel (Danny) Sullivan APM will take command of Orana Mid-Western Police District today (Monday 2 August 2021).
Western Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner, Geoff McKechnie APM, said Supt Sullivan is a very experienced Commander who brings with him a wealth of knowledge, particularly in the area of crime prevention.
“His previous work with youth in the Hunter Region will stand him in good stead as there is a real focus on prevention of youth crime in the Orana Mid-Western Police District,” Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said.
Supt Sullivan joined the NSW Police Force in 1989 and was initially stationed in Waverly Police Station performing general duties.
He then transferred to Legal Services where he attained the position as Police Prosecutor. In 1998, Danny was promoted to Sergeant at Newcastle Local Court.
Between 2000 and 2003 Supt Sullivan held various frontline positions throughout commands in the Hunter Region, before attaining the rank of Inspector at the Police Assistance Line in 2003 where he led a team of over 200 and redesigned the state’s triple zero (000) network to improve service to the public.
In 2007 he was promoted to Superintendent at Business and Technology Services before his appointment as Commander at Police Radio Operations, leading the largest private radio network in the Southern Hemisphere. In this role he also coordinated police response to crime and emergency management incidents.
He was appointed to Commander of Brisbane Water Local Area Command in 2012 before transferring to Lake Macquarie Police District in 2017 where he his innovative approach to crime prevention, in particular youth crime were hallmarks of his tenure.
Preventing youth crime and working closely with schools and teenagers within the community to break the cycle of recidivist offending will be a priority for Supt Sullivan.
“Engaging with local communities is essential in achieving results in this area,” he said.
“I am a commander who you will see absorbing themselves in the fabric of the community; I live and breathe the community I am a part of.
“I want to get to know the locals, know the business owners – it’s one of the most key elements to gaining the community’s trust.”
Supt Sullivan said he looks forward to engaging and working with local communities within Orana Mid-Western Police District on commencing his position.
“I am a very strong advocate for supporting our own – our local cops here within the district,” he said.
“We all live here, we all want what’s best for the community, and we have to support one another as we continue to protect and serve NSW.”
