Canberra’s first major urban street art festival – Surface – has been rescheduled to March next year.
Originally planned for the first weekend of November 2021, the new rescheduled date for Surface will be from Friday 4 March until Sunday 6 March 2022. The new date will allow Canberrans and participating artists to enjoy the festival safely.
“Festival organisers have been working hard behind the scenes and planning is well underway toward delivering this exciting new three-day festival for the City centre, Braddon as well as other parts of Canberra,” ACT Graffiti Management Coordinator, Lisa Petheram said.
“Already 13 walls have been secured in the Braddon and Civic areas that will be used as canvases for the big event. More walls will be announced as we continue to engage with the local community.”
Surface will help enliven the streets and laneways of the City centre and Braddon, with art pieces and satellite projects to also appear in Woden and Weston Creek. At least 15 artists (local and interstate) will work across three days painting walls with colourful, textured and wild surfaces. The works will showcase a diversity of themes and subjects, including portraits.
Ms Petheram said Surface will be designed for people to wander through the festival locations in a COVID safe way to observe artworks being painted and get involved in public events across the weekend in March 2022.
“We will do this by providing Check In CBR codes, having social distancing measures in place and also notifying participants of COVID safe requirements via onsite signage and social media relevant at the time of the event,” Ms Petheram said.
“Coordinated activities are planned to include workshops, panel talks and other events relating to street art, graffiti and urban culture.
“As we get closer to the new date, more details will be released on what is set to be a valuable addition to Canberra’s events calendar,” Ms Petheram said.
