Premier Mark McGowan and Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery today officially opened a new Jobs and Skills Centre (JSC) in Kununurra – the 17th in Western Australia’s network of centres – providing specialist training and career advice to job seekers and young people across the State.
The new JSC at North Regional TAFE’s Kununurra campus is the latest of 11 centres set up in regional WA, highlighting the McGowan Government’s commitment to supporting regional workforces.
JSCs offer free and friendly professional careers, training and employment advice to students, jobseekers, employers and industry.
The East Kimberley centre is available to job seekers looking for job application support and career guidance, as well as local businesses needing to access practical and professional advice.
Its team will also support businesses by advertising their job vacancies and promoting career information, while providing access to trainee and apprenticeship information.
Aboriginal people are a key priority client group in the East Kimberley, and Aboriginal development organisation Wunan Foundation will support the JSC with its extensive connections, and expert knowledge in the region.
Specialising in Aboriginal services, the centre will provide culturally sensitive employment and career services, and access to job opportunities through Aboriginal job boards.
For employers and businesses, the team will offer advice on how to create more culturally aware workplaces to attract and retain Aboriginal employees.
Outreach services to smaller towns and communities, including Halls Creek, Warmun and Wyndham are also supported through the JSC.

“Training and re-training Western Australians has been a major priority for my Government over the past five years as we have worked to rebuild the TAFE sector, and introduce Jobs and Skills Centres around the State.

“These centres will bring together a range of services for the people of Kununurra, providing employment and training opportunities, to help people secure quality local jobs.”

“This new Jobs and Skills Centre provides the East Kimberley region with a one-stop shop for job seekers and employers to access career support, advice, training and employment services.
“Like the other centres established across the State, it will work to meet local needs – including addressing youth unemployment, and offering specialist career services for Aboriginal people.
“The McGowan Government is committed to expanding careers and training services that translate into real employment opportunities for local people.”

“This new centre will be a great addition to Kununurra and the surrounding communities, providing advice for people looking for work and training opportunities as well as helping local businesses find the workers they need.
“It’s really important that these services are working with Aboriginal people to deliver culturally sensitive advice and creating long term employment for people and businesses.”
