An exciting vision for the Victory Park precinct in Traralgon is set out in a new master plan endorsed at the May Council meeting.
Mayor of Latrobe City Council Councillor Sharon Gibson said the master plan provides a strategic blueprint for the future upgrade of five key spaces within the greater Victory Park precinct, including Newman Park, Victory Park, Doorty Park, Eric Taylor Reserve and Bert Thompson Reserve.
“This plan sets out how these well-loved spaces could be improved over time,” the Mayor said.
“The master plan has been informed by feedback received from the wider community as well as from park user groups, including Traralgon Lions Club, Rotary Club of Traralgon, Traralgon and District Historical Society, Monomeath Senior Citizens Club and Gippsland Model Engineering Society.
“Many suggestions were received about the Newman Park Playground and this input will be used to inform future detailed design work, subject to funding,” the Mayor said.
“Suggested improvements for the playground included a bouldering unit, picnic pavilions and a flying fox, which is a really popular feature our community has been asking for some time.”
The master plan sets out an exciting vision that will bring more life and activity to the area while still protecting the natural beauty.
The plan is built around three key ideas: creating vibrant spaces for people to enjoy; restoring and caring for the environment; and strengthening the community’s connection to place.
The design celebrates what locals already love about the area, including the natural creek, established trees and relaxed parkland feel, while introducing thoughtful improvements to make it even more inviting and usable.
In 2023, the estimated cost of delivering the draft plan was $8.4 million. Implementation would be staged and remains subject to future funding, priorities and feasibility, with projects identified as high, medium and low priority.
Alongside potential improvements at Newman Park, the master plan identifies a range of possible upgrades across other local parks. This includes improved walking connections and updated paths at Victory Park and Doorty Park, additional tree planting and spectator seating at Eric Taylor Reserve, and refreshed garden beds and potential footpath changes at Bert Thompson Reserve.
The final Victory Park Precinct Master Plan will be published on Council’s website.
