New measures to strengthen franchising industry

The Australian Government has released its response to the Fairness in Franchising report, which identified significant problems in parts of the franchising sector.

Minister for Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business, Senator Michaelia Cash and Minister for Housing and Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar have announced a plan to help ensure fairness and accountability for both franchisors and franchisees.

The government will commit to restoring confidence in the franchising sector by:

  • introducing new measures to protect franchisees
  • improving the information available to franchisees
  • lifting franchisor standards of conduct through stronger enforcement

“We know small and family business and the franchising sector is critical to the Australian economy.” Minister Cash said.

“Our government will ensure the right conditions are in place to support these businesses”

“We will strengthen the regulatory framework and restore confidence in the sector while carefully designing changes in consultation with the sector to ensure they are practical to implement.”

The government will work with franchisors and franchisees to design and implement the reforms.
