Minister for Resources and Water, Keith Pitt, today announced the chair of the new Modernising Murray River Systems technical panel, a measure included in the Murray-Darling Basin Communities Investment Package 2022.
“Today, I announce Dr John McVeigh will chair the Modernising Murray River Systems panel which will look for water infrastructure opportunities that could improve delivery and reliability of water right across the southern Basin,” Minister Pitt said.
“Dr McVeigh will hit the ground running, helping to establish the independent panel of experts from fields such as hydrology, engineering, infrastructure and ecology. Together they will conduct a 12-month assessment of the future readiness of the southern Murray-Darling Basin water delivery infrastructure in the new financial year.
“The panel will assess whether existing infrastructure and the significant investments over the past decades are able to meet the needs of a modern, future-focused river system. The panel will develop a priority list of infrastructure opportunities to improve water security for all water users and mitigate the impact of future floods and droughts on Basin communities.
“The Australian Government is taking an evidence based approach to identify and develop a priority list of infrastructure investments, both new and existing improvements. This investment in assessing and scoping future infrastructure needs will benefit industry, help mitigate the impacts of natural disasters and improve the livelihoods of millions who call the Basin home.
“Dr McVeigh brings with him decades of experience in strategic leadership roles, strong connections to regional Australia and a personal, professional and academic background in water policy.
“I congratulate Dr John McVeigh and welcome him to the role bringing the skills and experience necessary to oversee the panel and deliver not just for the Australian Government, but for all Basin communities.”
