New mountain bike trails pedal towards construction

Construction of a brand-new mountain bike adventure experience will soon get underway, with Western Downs Regional Council endorsing the successful contractor to deliver the exciting project.

Common Ground Trails Pty Ltd has been selected to construct new mountain bike trails at the Bunya Mountains, which will see approximately 30kms of trails established in the vicinity of Russell Park.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Events and Regional Promotion Councillor Kylie Bourne said the trails would make the Western Downs a premier destination for mountain biking.

“The Western Downs is bursting with unique tourist experiences which encourage people to head outdoors and explore our beautiful natural landscapes and rich heritage,” Cr Bourne said.

“We’re so excited to be partnering with the Australian Government to deliver this wonderful new recreational experience in the most pristine of locations, which will no doubt be a major drawcard and generate economic growth.

“This fantastic project will put our region on the map in terms of high-class mountain biking facilities, designed to meet Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA) standards and offering easy to intermediate adventure loops.”

Council Spokesperson for Recreational Spaces and Cemeteries Councillor Carolyn Tillman said the trails would offer an adrenalin hit for all ages.

“Our trails will be designed to be enjoyed by new riders right through to those who are more experienced with five dedicated one-way loops and two dual direction link trails, including a 1.7km link from Dandabah to Fishers Lookout,” Cr Tillman said.

“These trails are designed to be considerate of the natural environment and have been approved by the Department of Environment and Science and we are working closely with multiple stakeholders, including the traditional owners, to ensure that the project is respectful of the pristine Bunya Mountains environment and indigenous culture. A key aspect of the trails is to ensure they are sympathetic to the environment and sustainable.

“These mountain biking trails are a first for the region and will offer another fantastic opportunity for residents and visitors to explore the region and enjoy all we have to offer here on the Western Downs.”

Common Ground Trails Director David Willcox said he was thrilled to be working with Western Downs Regional Council to create awesome new mountain bike trails at Russell Park.

“We see the Bunya Mountains as an idyllic backdrop for the development of trails in regional Queensland,” Mr Willcox said.

“We have extensive experience in trail construction across Australia and always look to create trails which celebrate the local landscape whilst providing exciting riding opportunities which cater to all skill levels.

“The beauty of mountain biking is that it can cater for the whole. Getting kids out on trails on their bikes at a young age creates outdoor advocates for a lifetime.”

Construction is expected to commence late August and take approximately 8 months to construct the trails. In addition to the trails, the project will also include trailhead construction at Tolmie Street, Fishers Lookout, Russell Park and Munro’s Camp.
