New Multipurpose and Evacuation Centre delivered for Tumut

NSW Gov

The Snowy Valleys community is better prepared for future emergencies with the new Multipurpose and Evacuation Centre (MEC) now operating in Tumut.

The purpose-built facility received more than $13 million from the Australian and NSW governments through the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund under the jointly funded Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

The facility serves as both a regional sports and events venue and a modern Emergency and Evacuation Centre during natural disasters.

The MEC includes indoor sports courts, spectator seating, amenities, a café, storage space and parking. It will host sporting competitions, conferences and community activities throughout the year.

Equivalent in size to two basketball courts, the new multipurpose courts support basketball, netball, volleyball, futsal, pickleball and badminton and cricket training, giving the community more opportunities to stay active and play sport year-round.

The MEC is already delivering benefits for the community with more than 600 people involved in the current basketball competition season.

With the Snowy Valleys vulnerable to bushfires and other natural disasters, the MEC can be quickly transformed into an Emergency and Evacuation Centre, providing shelter and support when it is needed most.

The project delivers long-term benefits for the region by supporting emergency preparedness, recreation and community connection.
