New partnership to deliver up to 65 new homes for ACT

Australian Treasury

The Albanese Government’s Social Housing Accelerator will build 65 homes for Canberrans who need them.

As part of the $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator, the ACT Government has received $50 million from the Commonwealth to deliver these additional homes.

All the Commonwealth funding for these homes must be committed by the ACT by 30 June 2025.

The Government is today releasing final implementation plans for the $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator that shows how many homes state and territory governments will deliver with funding from the Commonwealth.

This is another example of the Albanese Government working with the ACT Government to build more homes.

This includes a minimum of 1,200 homes for the ACT through Housing Australia.

We have already announced a joint Build-to-Rent-to-Buy pilot program in Belconnen with the ACT Government to build up to 22 affordable long-term rental homes.

Today’s announcement builds on the Government’s new $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund and agreement by National Cabinet to deliver the most significant housing reforms in a generation.

This agreement includes a new national target to build 1.2 million new well‑located homes, the National Planning Reform Blueprint, and A Better Deal for Renters.

At National Cabinet, the Albanese Government also committed a further $3 billion to the New Homes Bonus to incentivise states and territories to undertake the reforms necessary to reach the 1.2 million well‑located homes target.

A new Housing Support Program will also provide another $500 million to help local and state and territory governments deliver new housing supply in well‑located areas.

Quotes attributable to Federal Housing Minister Julie Collins:

“We recognise Australia is facing housing challenges, which is why we’re taking immediate action with our $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator – including $50 million for the ACT.

“This new funding, and the homes we are announcing today, will mean more ACT residents have a safe and affordable place to call home.

“The Social Housing Accelerator is just one part of our ambitious housing reform agenda.

“This agenda is already making a real difference – here in the ACT and right across the country.”

Quotes attributable to ACT Minister for Housing and Suburban Development Yvette Berry:

“Ensuring all Canberrans can access affordable, comfortable and secure homes will always be a priority of the ACT Government.

“The Commonwealth Government’s Social Housing Accelerator is a fantastic opportunity to increase the supply of housing in the ACT. The Social Housing Accelerator will make a real difference to those experiencing effects of the housing crisis, particularly those on lower incomes.

“That’s why the ACT Government has allocated the entire share of Accelerator funds to building and buying more public housing.

“We have a two-part plan to do this in a way that complements our existing range of housing initiatives. Firstly, the ACT Government is going to purchase around 25 newly-built or off-the-plan properties. Secondly, the Government is going to construct about 35 new homes. This plan will give at least 60 more families experiencing vulnerability or disadvantage a place to call home in Canberra.”
