New Road Safety Camera Commissioner Appointed

  • Minister for Police and Emergency Services

The Andrews Labor Government has announced the appointment of former Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner for Road Safety Stephen Leane as the state’s new Road Safety Camera Commissioner.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville congratulated Mr Leane, saying he’s one of Victoria’s leading road safety experts and would bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role.

Mr Leane has 40 years’ experience in Victoria Police, having worked in a range of senior command roles across the organisation, and was most recently the state’s top traffic police officer, responsible for driving road safety across the state.

Since he was appointed Assistant Commissioner Road Safety in November last year, Mr Leane has led Victoria Police’s work on road safety, while overseeing the delivery of new road policing technology.

Victoria’s road safety camera network is one of the many enforcement strategies used to make our roads safer, helping changing driver behaviour and holding dangerous drivers to account.

The Road Safety Camera Commissioner plays an essential role in providing the community with confidence that Victoria’s road safety camera network is operating with accuracy, integrity and efficiency.

The recently passed Police Legislation (Road Safety Camera Commissioner and Other Matters) Act 2019 strengthens the Commissioner’s role and will improve the quality, transparency and timeliness of information sharing between the Commissioner, Department of Justice and Community Safety and contractors.

Sal Perna will continue as Acting Road Safety Camera Commissioner until Mr Leane commences in the role on 9 December 2019.

As stated by Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville

“With 40 years’ experience at Victoria Police, Stephen Leane has the right knowledge and experience to provide oversight and assurance of our road safety camera system, which plays a critical role in saving lives.”

“It is critical that Victorians have complete confidence in the integrity of speed cameras and Mr Leane brings a wealth of understanding to the role to ensure they’re working effectively.”

“I’d also like to thank John Voyage for his strong oversight of the camera system and passionate advocacy for road safety during his time as Commissioner.”

As stated by Road Safety Camera Commissioner Stephen Leane

“I’ve seen first-hand the impact that road trauma has on the community and camera technology plays a critical role in reducing road trauma. I know how important it is that Victorians must have confidence in the road safety camera system.”

“I’ll bring my experience and commitment to road safety to the commissioner’s role, and work on behalf of the community to ensure the system is working fairly and accurately and helping to save lives.”
