New Roundabout For Remembrance Drive Intersection

VIC Premier

The Victorian Government is funding the construction of a roundabout to improve safety at the intersection of Remembrance Drive and Madden Road near Ballarat.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said the Victorian Government was investing $3 million for the new roundabout, with planning and design work already underway.

A working group made up of Regional Roads Victoria (RRV), Victoria Police, the City of Ballarat and the Avenue of Honour Committee have identified a roundabout as the best long-term upgrade to ensure the intersection is safe.

It follows a range of upgrades such as speed restrictions, dedicated turning lanes and improved signage, which were delivered at the intersection last year to immediately improve safety while longer-term upgrades were investigated.

RRV is now in the early stages of planning and designing the new roundabout.

Significant and careful planning is required, particularly in relation to the heritage of the Avenue of Honour, and the community will be kept up to date as plans progress and timeframes are determined.

During the five-year period between 2015 and the end of 2019, this intersection has been the site of eight crashes resulting 16 people being injured. Tragically this has included one death and seven serious injuries.

The funding for the new roundabout is part of the Victorian Government’s $1.4 billion investment into reducing road trauma across the state.

As stated by Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll

“The dedicated working group that has been investigating options for Remembrance Drive identified a roundabout as the preferred option at this intersection – and we’ve listened to that advice.”

“This intersection has a tragic history of crashes and after delivering immediate safety improvements last year, we’re investing in a new roundabout to provide a longer-term upgrade.”

As stated by Member for Western Victoria Jaala Pulford

“Designs are already underway for the roundabout, to make sure safety at the intersection is improved while also maintaining the heritage value of the Avenue of Honour.”

“More details will be shared with the community as that careful planning process continues.”
