Southern Tasmania now has a new land use strategy to help guide where and how growth and development should occur.
Minister for Housing and Planning, Kerry Vincent, said the new Southern Tasmania Regional Land Use Strategy defines modern land use framework to help deliver thriving regions.
“Whether it is population growth, housing supply, access to jobs and infrastructure or protecting some of the region’s most valued features, the new strategy will help to ensure development is in the right locations and fit for purpose,” Minister Vincent said.
“We have built a cohesive new strategy from scratch to suit current economic, environmental and social conditions to set Southern Tasmania up for the future.
“I want to thank the 12 southern councils for their contribution and assistance in developing this Strategy, which is about making sure future development happens in the right place and is supported by good planning so communities have what they need to thrive.”
The regional land use strategies are important planning documents used to inform decisions about future land use and development.
These strategies make it easier to address planning issues across multiple local government areas in a more coordinated way.
Minister Vincent said key factors had to be considered by local planning authorities before setting aside more land for future development.
“The Strategy will help streamline approvals by making it clear where development should occur and what is appropriate, reducing uncertainty for everyone involved,” Minister Vincent said.
“This Strategy is the culmination of sustained collaboration between the Tasmanian Government, southern Tasmanian councils, industry and local communities to shape a vision for the region.
“It will provide a clear and enduring framework for sustainable growth and development, enabling better planning outcomes and greater certainty and confidence for those involved in land use planning decisions across the region.”
