New Sport NZ chair appointed

Raewyn Lovett has been appointed as Chair of the Sport New Zealand Ihi Aotearoa (Sport NZ) and High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ) Boards.

She takes over from Bill Moran, who stepped down as chair of both boards at the end of June after five years in the role.

“I would like to acknowledge and thank Bill Moran for his work on the board since 2016, both as a board member and as chair over the last five years, Bill has been a stalwart in steering the sector, and Sport NZ and HPSNZ through some challenging times,” Grant Robertson said.

“I am pleased to see him continue as a board member for another year to provide support for the new governance leadership.”

Raewyn Lovett was appointed to the Sport NZ Board in 2018, becoming Deputy Chair in August 2021. She was appointed to the HPSNZ Board at the beginning of 2022 as Deputy Chair. She is a partner at Duncan Cotterill specialising in commercial law and has experience in a variety of governance roles in the sport and not-for-profit sectors.

Duane Kale has been appointed as deputy Chair of both Boards.

He was appointed to the Sport NZ Board in 2021 and the HPSNZ Board in September 2022. He is a Paralympian with significant governance and commercial finance experience. Mr Kale was an elected member of Paralympics New Zealand for eleven years and has been appointed by the International Olympic Committee to the Evaluation Commission for the 2024 Paralympic and Olympic Games.

“I welcome the new leadership team with Raewyn and Duane bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to their new roles. I look forward to working with them,” Grant Robertson said.

Raewyn Lovett ONZM

Raewyn Lovett joined the board in 2018.

She is a partner at Duncan Cotterill specialising in commercial law. Raewyn has experience in a variety of governance roles in the sport and not for profit sectors.

She is currently co-chair of the International Working Group on Women and Sport, chair of Dunedin Venues Management Limited and chair of CHT Healthcare, as well as a director of TAB New Zealand. Raewyn is a former chair of Aktive – Auckland Sport and Recreation and is also a former Netball New Zealand chair.

In 2015 Raewyn Lovett received the Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her service as Chair of Netball NZ, where she helped move the sport into a semi-professional environment.

Duane Kale ONZM

Duane was with the ANZ/National Bank from 1995 to 2021 holding Regional Management and Head of Department positions.

Paralympian #96, Duane achieved multi medal success at the Atlanta Paralympic Games and went on to lead the New Zealand team to Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Paralympic Games as Chef de Mission. He was elected to the International Paralympic Committee Governing Board in 2013 and in 2017 became Vice President.

Duane has spent 11 years as a Board member of Paralympics New Zealand and has been appointed by the International Olympic Committee to the Evaluation Commission for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In 1997 he was made an Officer of the New Zealand Oder of Merit for services to swimming and in 2019 was awarded the Sport New Zealand Lifetime Achievement Award. He holds an MBA from Massey University.
