Sports fans in Tully will be cheering the news their town has received funding for a new sporting complex through Round 4 of the Palaszczuk Government’s successful $295 million Building our Regions (BoR) program.
The $7.1 million Tully Multi-Use Sporting Complex project is receiving $3 million from BoR, with Cassowary Coast Regional Council contributing $4,078,000, and $22,000 coming from local football clubs.
Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said a multi-use sporting complex and grandstand would be delivered in the Tully Showgrounds sports precinct, with up to 23 jobs supported during construction.
“The showgrounds are a high-profile feature of the town and are pivotal in the social and recreational life of Tully,” Mr Dick said.
“This BoR investment will allow for bigger events to be held at the showgrounds and will boost employment growth across the Cassowary Coast region.
“In addition to the construction jobs, Cassowary Coast Regional Council predicts the new sports complex will result in the indirect creation of 30 new jobs between 2018 and 2043.
“During the same period council estimates it will pump $21.3 million into the Cassowary Coast economy.
“The Tully Showgrounds sporting precinct has been used for rugby league and other junior, school and community sporting and recreational activities for more than 40 years,” he said.
“This project will result in more sporting, recreation and entertainment events coming to Tully, which will attract greater numbers of visitors to the town and help boost local business.”
Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor John Kremastos said the Building our Regions funding was great news for Tully.
“This sports complex will increase the diversity and sustainability of the area by growing the range of events, activities and uses it can host, while reducing the traditional reliance on a one-off major event like the annual show.”
Round 4 of Building our Regions will see the Palaszczuk Government partner with 37 councils on 49 projects – work which will create an estimated 657 jobs.
Under previous rounds, the program has allocated $225 million to 174 critical infrastructure projects across the state, generating 1762 jobs and attracting additional investment of $353.5 million from councils and other organisations.
Through the first three rounds of BoR, Cassowary Coast Regional Council received $5,984,134 for three projects, supporting around 40 jobs.
