The Rockliff Liberal Government is purchasing the former City View Motel in Montagu Bay as the future long-term site for a Year 11 and 12 student residence in Southern Tasmania.
This will provide long-term security for regional and remote students from the East Coast, Tasman Peninsula and other regional areas in the state’s South from 2024 onwards.
The former motel will replace the current interim residence at TasTAFE Warrane when the 2023 school year finishes.
Minister for Education, Children and Youth, Roger Jaensch, said the new facility will increase capacity and provide highly suitable amenities for Year 11 and 12 student residents.
“It is conveniently located next door to Rose Bay High School, and is a 10-minute walk to Rosny College, with regular transport services nearby,” Minister Jaensch said.
“The location also presents an opportunity to further strengthen the relationship between the Rosny College student wellbeing team and the student residence staff, providing best possible supports for our students.
“The Department for Education, Children and Young People is in the latter stages of purchasing the former motel, which will provide long-term security for regional and remote students from the East Coast, Tasman Peninsula and other regional areas in Southern Tasmania.”
Liberal Member for Prosser, Jane Howlett, said the new accommodation in the South was a great outcome for students and their families.
“The Rockliff Liberal Government has once again delivered on its long-term plan to do what matters for Tasmanians,” Ms Howlett said.
“This purchase means our Government is able to provide suitable accommodation for rural and regional students from rural and regional areas, which ensures those Year 11 and 12 students can have access to the education and training they need.”
In addition to families of current and future applicants being advised of the new accommodation, an open day will be scheduled before Christmas for families and carers of applicants and other interested parties.
