New student residence for Southern Tasmania ready

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Education, Children and Youth

The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering support for our regional students to complete Years 11 and 12 at a school of their choice in 2024.

Minister for Education, Children and Youth, Roger Jaensch, visited the new Southern Region Student Residence, formerly the City View Motel, which this week welcomes the first intake of students for the start of the school year.

“The new student residence at Montagu Bay provides our young people with the opportunity to live in supported accommodation while completing their studies, allowing them to thrive and grow,” Minister Jaensch said.

“The Rockliff Liberal Government’s investment of $5.3 million provides our regional students in the South safe and contemporary accommodation so they can complete their senior secondary schooling.”

The Department for Education, Children and Young People currently operates three student residences across Tasmania – in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie.

Following the closure of the Springvale Hostel in 2022, the Department has taken over operational responsibility for the student residence in Southern Tasmania.

This new facility will support approximately 30 students each year and is operated by a group of dedicated Department staff including the Student Residence Manager, supervisors and a youth worker.

Liberal Member for Prosser, Jane Howlett, thanked the Department staff for the work that has gone into establishing suitable accommodation for rural and regional students from the south.

“I want to acknowledge the contributions of the Department of Education, Children and Young People staff in supporting our regional young people through this very important phase in their lives,” Ms Howlett said.

“I look forward to the first intake of students taking up residence at the start of Term 1.”

The Southern Region Student Residence will be officially opened on Monday, 19 February 2024, with special guests being given a tour of the facility by student representatives.
