Logan City Council will seek public consultation on a new Waste Management Strategy.
The draft Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy 2022-2032 sets out the direction for how Council will manage waste and recover resources in the city over the next decade.
More than 225,000 tonnes of waste is handled every year in the City of Logan. About 48,000 tonnes is recycled.
The strategy forms part of Council’s plan to reduce household waste generation by 25 per cent and recycle 95 per cent of household waste by 2050.
Waste Committee Chair, Deputy Mayor Jon Raven, said reducing levels of waste was important for a more sustainable future.
“Reducing waste to landfill is important for the environment and cost of living pressures for our community. We’d love to hear residents’ feedback on this strategy,” Cr Raven said.
Council had led the way on improved waste management for residents in recent years, including:
- Implementation of opt-in green bin service and compost bin rebate scheme
- Delivery of a waste and recycling education program to school and community groups.
- Establishment of e-waste and paint recycling at Council waste transfer stations.
Council is also planning for the future by partnering with Redlands and Ipswich councils to build a regional Material Recovery Facility at Browns Plains.
It could handle up to 60,000 tonnes of recycled materials annually.
