New Year’s Eve fireworks postponed

The current bushfire threat gripping many parts of the country and the high probability of total fire bans has prompted Armidale Regional Council to postpone the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Armidale.

Careful consideration has gone into making this decision which was required now to give suppliers and pyro technicians HolySmoke advanced notice.

Armidale Regional Council Mayor Cr Simon Murray said this was a sensible course of action in light of the unprecedented fire threat hanging over our region.

“Some of our younger members in the community may be disappointed but I am confident the Armidale community will whole-heartedly agree with this decision, a tinder dry landscape and fireworks don’t mix,” said Cr Murray.

Council would like to reassure the community that the fireworks display is not cancelled and will be incorporated into an event to be determined in the near future.

“It may sound strange to postpone New Year’s Eve fireworks,” said Cr Murray.” But we are keen to put our fireworks in the bank for a time, I hope sooner than later, that we can celebrate with a big event the drought breaking and thank our firefighters and emergency services for their efforts.”
