New youth facility for Georges River opening soon

Georges River Council

The Penshurst Park Sporting Hub will soon be the home to a brand new youth facility for Georges River. Equipped with a training kitchen, half-court basketball venue and multipurpose rooms it will provide opportunities and affordable access for youth development programs.

The new facility is located between Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre and the Norm O’Neill Cricket Training Facility, with access to parking and within walking distance to Hurstville train station and other transport connections.

Leading community group 3Bridges will be the first operator to call it home, opening doors for young people looking to expand their experience in different fields.

With innovative solutions to connect local businesses and young jobseekers, local youth will have opportunities to gain employment in hospitality, community development and youth support, through mentoring and on-the-job training.

Georges River Mayor Kevin Greene said 3Bridges is a leading body for community capacity building and Council is proud to have such a long-standing relationship that offers significant value to our community.

“This new facility is part of the staged Master Plan for Penshurst Park, and includes a brand new playground, sports field, 265-seat accessible grandstand and more.

“In the next stage we are looking to build more indoor courts and gymnastics space, a café area and landscaping.

“I hope to see our local youth utilise these contemporary spaces as a safe haven to foster connection and develop new skills.”

Fatima, a current user of 3Bridges youth services, said, “It is important for local youth to have a dedicated space, because it shows that our decision makers care about the youth.

“I am glad to see that it will provide us a safe space to hang out, do work and talk to one another without worrying about other people’s judgement.

“It is vital for the creation of such an environment, especially for young people experiencing depression, anxiety and stress – a carefree space that is dedicated for local youth.”

Construction is anticipated to be complete in the coming weeks.
