Ngukurr, Rittarangu latest focus of Territory Labor Government’s remote housing program

A Katherine-based Aboriginal Business Enterprise has this week been awarded a $19.3 million tender to build and upgrade homes across Ngukurr and Rittarangu (also known as Urapunga).

Binjari Community Aboriginal Corporation will build and upgrade homes in the two Arnhem Land communities, with works to roll out over three years.

The first tranche – worth $9.4 million – includes demolition, construction, upgrades, repairs and maintenance works.

Homes at Ngukurr will be built on a 17-lot subdivision completed in 2019.

In the first six months of this year, the Territory Labor Government awarded 38 contracts worth more than $153 million as part of its $2.2 billion investment in remote housing.

Since 2016, more than $1 billion worth of remote housing works have been delivered through a range of programs funded by both the Northern Territory and Commonwealth governments. Around 3280 homes have so far been built, extended and upgraded; including works completed and underway.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Housing and Homelands Selena Uibo:

“The Territory’s first Local Decision Making agreement was signed at Ngukurr, so community members have been actively involved in the delivery of services for some time now, and have helped to plan and design these housing works.

“This is also fantastic news for the people of Rittarangu who are looking forward to continuing to be a part of building and improving homes in their community.

“The three-year contract gives locals job surety and the opportunity to complete certifications and apprenticeships, which is important because our remote housing program is part of the Territory Labor Government’s holistic approach to building the capacity of communities such as Ngukurr and Rittarangu.”
