NMI trade measurement inspectors will visit businesses involved in making, importing, packaging, distributing and selling animal and pet products. The audit will include a strong focus on regional livestock suppliers.
Accurate measurement matters to consumers, farmers and businesses. Businesses sell products by weight, volume or count. Australians expect labels to match what they receive.
For regional producers, even small measurement errors can add up over time. Accurate measurement helps farmers manage costs, make informed decisions and run productive businesses.
The audit will examine products such as:
- pet food
- animal feed
- nutritional supplements
- animal health products
- animal care supplies.
Inspectors will check measuring instruments, packaging, labelling and sales practices, including products sold online.
NMI aims to complete 350 trader audits during the program, helping build a current picture of compliance across the sector and identify opportunities for future education and engagement.
The audit will also support the many businesses that already meet their obligations and work hard to provide customers with fair and accurate transactions. These businesses can have confidence that they are competing on a level playing field.
NMI uses a risk-based approach to compliance. Inspectors work with businesses to help them understand and meet their obligations. Most issues found during inspections are minor and businesses correct them quickly. If inspectors find serious problems, NMI may take further regulatory action.
