Nominations open for Wyndham Champions of girls’ and women’s sport

We know you are missing playing or watching sport while in lockdown, but let’s remember the amazing girl or woman who can kick like AFLW star Tayla Harris, or score like a Matilda.

Wyndham City is looking to shine the spotlight on individuals and clubs who have made a difference to girls’ and women’s sport – and we’re calling on people to nominate someone they know for the Wyndham Champions of Girls’ and Women’s Sport recognition program.

The program is centred around five categories: Young Up and Coming Performers; Inspirational People or Drivers of Change; Coaches, Umpires and Referees Who Are Role Models; Clubs and Organisations; and Elite Performers.

Nominees must have lived or trained in Wyndham, or be involved with a sports club in Wyndham, to be eligible.

Each nominee that meets the eligibility criteria will be recognised for their contribution to girls’ and women’s sport with a certificate signed by the Mayor and Sports Development portfolio holder and will have their story shared on Wyndham City’s website.

Wyndham City Sports Development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said recognising Wyndham’s champions would help to increase the profile of girls’ and women’s sport.

“The Wyndham Champions of Girls’ and Women’s Sport will celebrate the inspirational athletes, coaches, umpires and club members within Wyndham who have done great things for girls’ and women’s sport,” Cr Maynard said.

“Sport is a great way to have fun, keep in touch with friends and improve health and wellbeing, and by recognising those who have championed girls’ and women’s sport, and telling their stories, we want to inspire others to get involved in sport.”

“This is part of Wyndham’s Gender Equality in Sport project, which is dedicated to increasing the participation of women and girls in sport, whether through playing, coaching, officiating or on a club committee or by helping clubs to be more inclusive and welcoming to women and girls of all abilities and backgrounds.”

Applications will close on Sunday 23rd August, with eligible applicants announced at an online event in September.
