Northern NSW soaked, with more rain to come

NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) Volunteers have responded to over 2600 requests for assistance in the last week from communities in Northern NSW following heavy rainfall and flooding. The majority of requests related to roof damage, fallen trees and branches, flood assistance, as well as 65 flood rescues.

NSW SES is now urging residents and businesses to continue to remain vigilant, with further heavy rainfall possible over Northern NSW later on Sunday or Monday.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) have today issued a Flood Watch for the Upper Macintyre, Gwydir, Peel/Namoi and Mid North Coastal River Catchments. Stay up to date with the latest BoM Warnings by visiting their current warnings page

With the ground already saturated in many Northern NSW towns, the probability of both flash and riverine flooding is increased.

Here are a few steps you can take to prepare if you live in a flood prone area:

  • Stack possessions, records, stock or equipment on benches and tables, placing electrical items on top
  • Secure objects that are likely to float and cause damage
  • Relocate waste containers, chemicals and poisons well above floor level
  • Activate your Home or Business FloodSafe Plan
