Notice to Appear – Liquor offences – Gunbalanya

Northern Territory Police have issued two Notices to Appear for liquor and driving offences in the remote community of Gunbalayna yesterday.

Gunbalanya Police apprehended a vehicle on the Arnhem Highway/Oenpelli Access Road and seized over 100 standard drinks and a quantity of illicit drugs believed destined for remote communities.

The two female occupants of the vehicle were arrested and the vehicle seized.

The 30-year-old was issued a Notice to Appear for:

  • Possess prohibited liquor restricted area
  • Drive unregistered vehicle
  • Drive uninsured vehicle

Due to appear in Maningrida Court on 29 August 2023.

The 32-year-old was issued a Notice to Appear for:

  • Possess prohibited liquor restricted area
  • Possess schedule 2 drug less traffickable quantity
  • Supply schedule 2 drug less commercial quantity

Due to appear in Oenpelli Court 27 September 2023.

These incidents come after a 28-year-old male was issued a Notice to Appear after his vehicle was intercepted on the Arnhem Highway last Friday. A search of the vehicle produced over 20 litres of alcohol allegedly destined for Gunbalanya.

He was issued a Notice to Appear for:

  • Bring Liquor into a restricted Area
  • Drive unregistered vehicle
  • Drive uninsured vehicle

He is due to appear in the Jabiru Court on 25 July 2023.

Remote Sergeant Jayde Gofton said “Alcohol and drugs are often a catalyst for Domestic Violence and their supply into vulnerable communities has devastating social and financial implications.

“NT Police have a zero tolerance approach to this sort of behaviour and we continue to urge anyone with information on the supply of illicit substances into remote communities to make contact on 131 444.
