NSW latest help shape Tamworth Hospital’s new palliative care unit

The Tamworth community is being invited to help shape the design of an expanded Palliative Care Unit at Tamworth Hospital which will future-proof care and support for patients facing life-limiting illnesses.

Regional Health Minister Ryan Park said the Tamworth Palliative Care unit is being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s $93 million World Class End of Life Care program to redevelop and enhance palliative care units across the state.

“The NSW Government is committed to ensuring people with life-limiting illnesses receive the highest quality end-of-life care at the right time, and in the right place,” Mr Park said.

“As well as featuring the latest technology and equipment, it’s essential the expanded Palliative Care Unit at Tamworth Hospital provides a comfortable and home-like setting to deliver the very best clinical care and emotional support.

“That’s why we’ve asked for community involvement, which will be key to shaping the important service.

“We are working to provide the health infrastructure that the community needs and deserves.”

General Manager of Tamworth Hospital Yvonne Patricks said the local community can play an important role in the next phase of the project, which involves designing the clinical areas, patient bedrooms, family zones and outdoor spaces.

“People who are passionate about improving palliative care and supportive services can become involved by completing the online form to register their engagement with the project,” Ms Patricks said.

Members of the community can register interest by completing an online application form.

Labor spokesperson for Tamworth Anthony D’Adam encouraged local residents to participate in the consultation process.

“We have a unique opportunity to provide input on the design of the palliative care unit to ensure it meets our community’s needs,” said Mr D’Adam.

“I encourage anyone in the community who is enthusiastic about this service to register their interest in participating in the design process.”

The project’s lead design team is working with the Hunter New England Local Health District to develop a master plan for the expanded unit, which will inform its location on the hospital campus and co-location with other services.

Tamworth Hospital is one of five hospitals across NSW to benefit from an expansion of palliative care services as part of the World Class End of Life Care program.
