A New South Wales man is expected to face Downing Centre Local Court today (14 August, 2026) charged for allegedly attempting to import 4kg of methamphetamine into Australia through the international mail stream.
An investigation began on 5 August, 2026, when Australian Border Force (ABF) officers detected anomalies in an air mail consignment sent from Germany and bound for a Macquarie Park address in Sydney.
Officers located a white crystallised substance embedded in a quilt. Preliminary testing returned a positive result for methamphetamine, with an estimated weight of 4kg.
ABF referred the matter to the AFP, which seized the consignment and started an investigation.
AFP inquiries identified a Macquarie Park man, 29, as the alleged intended recipient of the border-controlled drug.
Investigators allege the man travelled from Frankfurt, Germany, to Sydney via Dubai on 2 August, 2026, arriving in Australia on 3 August, 2026.
Further inquiries allegedly revealed the man had been tracking the progress of the package after returning to Australia.
On 13 August, 2026, AFP officers executed a search warrant at the man’s residence in Macquarie Park and seized a mobile phone.
Examination of the phone allegedly revealed tracking records, screenshots, and browser history relating to the intercepted consignment. Investigators also allegedly identified online searches seeking information about the price of a kilogram of methamphetamine in Amsterdam, and records of a hotel booking at Frankfurt Airport for 29 July, 2026.
During the search of the residence, investigators allegedly located a set of digital scales containing suspected drug residue, and a damaged mobile phone believed to have been used during the man’s recent travel to Europe.
The man was arrested and charged with one count of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug, namely methamphetamine, contrary to section 307.1 of the Criminal Code (Cth).
This offence carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
