NSW police arrest man after woman struck by car at Bankstown

A man is in custody and a woman is in a serious condition after she was struck by a car in Sydney’s south-west today.

About 12.50pm (Saturday 28 December 2019), emergency services were called to Chapel Road near High Street, Bankstown, following reports a woman had been struck by a car.

Officers from Bankstown Police Area command attended and were told a 69-year-old woman was walking along the footpath when she was hit by a car. The car stopped, and the driver fled the scene on foot.

She was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Liverpool Hospital with serious injuries.

Following inquiries, a 56-year-old was arrested a short time later on Edgar Street near Harris Street. He was conveyed to hospital for mandatory testing, before being taken to Bankstown Police Station to assist with inquiries.

Two crime scenes were established – on Chapel Road and Edgar Street – which will be examined by the Crash Investigation Unit and specialist forensic police.
