NSW police charge driver after fatal crash at Shellharbour

A driver has been charged after a teenager died while crossing the road on his bike in the Lake Illawarra region last month.

Just before 6pm on Tuesday 11 February 2020, emergency services attended Wattle Road, near Benson Avenue, Shellharbour City Centre, after receiving reports of a seriously injured 16-year-old boy.

The teen was allegedly struck by a Nissan sedan as he crossed Wattle Road while riding his bike.

He sustained head and chest injuries and was treated at the scene, before being flown to Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, in a critical condition, where he later died.

The female driver, aged 25, was not injured and participated in mandatory blood and urine testing.

Following inquiries by the Crash Investigation Unit, the driver has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death-drive manner dangerous, negligent driving (occasioning death), not stop at stop line at yellow light, class A motor vehicle exceed speed (less than 20km/h).

Her licence has been suspended and she will face Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 19 May 2020.
