NSW police charge man after car ignites during police pursuit at Moree

A man will face court today on numerous driving offences following a pursuit in the state’s north.

About 10.20am yesterday (Thursday 16 July 2020), officers attached to the New England Police District stopped a silver Mitsubishi Lancer sedan on Anne Street at Moree for the purpose of a random breath test.

As police approached the vehicle, it is alleged the driver accelerated harshly away from the location.

Police initiated a pursuit within the Moree township during which the vehicle is alleged to have reached speeds in excess of 120km/h, before losing control at the intersection of Frome and Anne streets.

The pursuit continued through several more residential streets and north on the Newell Highway when the vehicle caught fire and lost a front tire while travelling in the southbound lane.

Moree Proactive Crime Team officers, with the assistance of detectives, Rural Crime Investigators, General Duty officers and Highway Patrol Command, apprehended the driver and passenger after a short foot pursuit from the vehicle.

The pair were arrested and conveyed to Moree Police Station.

The driver, a man aged 23, was charged with numerous offences including outstanding warrants (x5), driving with expired licence, police pursuit, dangerous driving, possession of a prohibited drug and breaching a Domestic Apprehended Violence Order.

He was bail refused to appear before Moree Local Court today (Friday 17 July 2020).

The passenger, a man aged 30, was charged with possess prohibited drug.

He was issued a Court Attendance Notice to appear before Moree Local Court on Monday 24 August 2020.
