NSW police charge man after couple assaulted in supermarket at Liverpool

A man has been charged after he allegedly assaulted a couple at a supermarket in Sydney’s south west at the weekend.

Just before 9.30am on Saturday (25 July 2020), police were called to a supermarket on Macquarie Street at Liverpool following reports of an assault.

It’s alleged a 74-year-old woman was verbally abused by a man before being pushed to the ground.

Her husband, aged 87, was then punched in the face by the man after coming to her aid.

A security guard intervened and attempted to restrain the man, however, he pushed him in the chest and managed to flee.

The couple was taken to Liverpool Hospital where the woman was treated for hip injuries and the man received treatment for a head injury.

Officers from Liverpool City Police Area Command attended and commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 46-year-old man at a unit on Copeland Street, Liverpool, about 6.30am today (Monday 27 August 2020).

He was taken to Liverpool Police Station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of common assault.

The man was refused bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court today (Monday 27 July 2020).
