NSW police charge man after fire burns through bushland at Lightning Ridge

A man has been charged following an investigation into the cause of a bushfire which threatened a township in the state’s north-west last year.

About 9.30am on Saturday 21 November 2020, emergency services responded to reports of a bushfire burning approximately 2km north west of Grawin, near Lightning Ridge.

Approximately 218ha of bushland was destroyed across 10 days.

Officers attached to Central North Police District attended and will allege a Toyota Landcruiser found bogged in the area was the point of origin of the fire.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 53-year-old man at Walgett Police Station, about 9.10am today (Friday 15 January 2021).

The man was charged with intentionally light fire and be reckless as to its spread.

He was bail refused to appear at Walgett Local Court today (Friday 15 January 2021).
