NSW police charge man after pursuit at Lake Illawarra 6 October

A man has been charged following a pursuit in the Lake Illawarra region yesterday.

About 9.20pm (Tuesday 5 October 2021), officers from Lake Illawarra Highway Patrol were travelling north on the Princes Highway, Albion Park Rail, when the driver of a Ford Falcon allegedly overtook them at speed.

Police will allege the driver, a 75-year-old man, was travelling about 120km/h in a signposted 80km/h area.

Officers attempted to stop the driver before he allegedly accelerated away from them, and a pursuit was initiated.

The driver allegedly reached speeds of up to 180km/h in a 100km/h zone before he stopped a short time later at the Five Islands Road overpass.

He was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with police pursuit, and exceed speed limit by more than 45km/h.

The Eastwood man was also charged with not comply with noticed direction re s 7/8/9 – COVID-19, for allegedly being outside his LGA without a permitted excuse.

His licence was also suspended.

He was granted bail to appear before Kiama Local Court on Thursday 4 November 2021.
