A man has been charged following several pursuits from the Queensland Border to Guyra in the state’s Northern tablelands.
About 5pm Sunday (16 Febraury 2020), officers from New England Highway Patrol noticed a suspected stolen Holden Vetra on the New England Highway, north of Deepwater.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle, however, the Queensland registered vehicle allegedly failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit was terminated shortly after for safety reasons.
The driver stopped at a petrol station on Tenterfield street, Deepwater, where he fuelled the car, driving off and failing to pay.
Officers again activated warning devices in an attempt to stop then vehicle, south of the New England Highway, where a pursuit was intiated. The pursuit was terminated shortly after for safety reasons.
About 5.40pm, the vehicle was sighted again on the New England Highway, Guyra, where officers engaged in a pursuit.
Road spikes were successfully deployed by Police on the New England Highway approximately 1km from Gurya, however the vehicle continued into the 70km area, where it crashed over a median strip and mounted the footpath at the intersection of New England Highway and Ollera Street, near the railway line.
The vehicle came to a stop and the man fled on foot towards the main street of Guyra, where he was apprehended a short time later.
The 19-year-old man was arrested and taken to Armidale Hospital for mandatory testing.
He was then taken to Armidale Police Station where he was charged with three counts of police pursuit – not stop – drive at speed, learner not accompanied by driver, exceed speed > 45 km/h, dishonestly obtain property by deception, receive property stolen outside NSW.
The man was refused bail to appear at Armidale Local Court on Wednesday 19 February 2020.
