NSW police charge man over sexual abuse of girl at Goulburn

A man faced court today charged over the alleged sexual abuse of a young girl in the state’s Southern Tablelands earlier this week.

Yesterday (Wednesday 19 January 2022), police received reports that a 15-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted earlier that day by a man known to her.

The matter was referred to the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad, who commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, a 69-year-old man was arrested by investigators – with the assistance of officers attached to Hume Police District – about 11.35pm the same day at a house in Goulburn.

The man was taken to Goulburn Police Station, where he was charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault – victim under the age of 16 years, and aggravated sexual assault – deprive liberty (DV).

Police will allege in court the girl was in the care of the man when the assault took place.

The man appeared at Goulburn Local Court today (Thursday 20 January 2022), where he was formally refused bail to reappear at the same court on Wednesday 16 March 2022.

The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.
