NSW police charge man with attempted car-jacking at Lake Illawarra

A man will face court today charged after allegedly attempting to steal a car in the Illawarra yesterday.

About 8.15pm (Thursday 11 June 2020), a 52-year-old man was sitting in his Toyota RAV4 while stopped on Kingston Street, Oak Flats, when a man approached the front passenger door and produced a hammer, demanding the driver give him his car.

The driver started the car and drove away before notifying police.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attended and established a perimeter, before conducting a search of the area with the assistance of the Dog Unit.

PD Mike tracked the man to the front yard of a home on Kingston Street, where he was found hiding behind shrubs.

The 33-year-old man was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with attempted robbery whilst armed with offensive weapon and breach of bail.

He was refused bail and is due to face Wollongong Local Court today (Friday 12 June 2020).
