NSW police charge man with intentionally causing fires at Burrill Lake

A man has been charged after allegedly deliberately lighting two fires on the South Coast.

About 1.30pm (Wednesday 29 January 2020), officers from South Coast Police District were alerted to a fire on the side of the Princess Highway in Burrill Lake – just south of Ulladulla.

A passer-by noticed the smoke and a man emerging from bushland nearby before calling police.

Fire and Rescue NSW attended and extinguished the fire after a couple of hours. It is believed the fire burnt approximately 50sqm of bush.

Following inquiries, police attended a home on Canberra Crescent, Burrill Lake and spoke with a 48-year-old man.

After speaking with the man, he was arrested and taken to Ulladulla Police Station where he was charged with two counts of intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread.

Police will allege in court the man deliberately lit two fires in bush area near Canberra Crescent, Burrill Lake – one at about 1.30pm today, and another fire on Saturday 4 November 2017.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Milton Local Court on Thursday 12 March 2020.
