NSW police charge six after police officers assaulted at Wagga Wagga

Six people have been charged over the alleged assault of two police officers in the state’s Riverina region yesterday.

About 11.10am (Tuesday 11 January 2022), officers attached to Riverina Police District’s Proactive Crime Team attended a home on Connorton Avenue, Ashmont, to make inquiries regarding a teenager, wanted over an unrelated matter.

While attempting to arrest a 14-year-old boy, it will be alleged a woman grabbed at a male constable before punching him in the head and knocking him to the ground.

As police arrested the 18-year-old woman, a man allegedly grabbed the head of a male detective senior constable. The 43-year-old man was also arrested.

A struggle ensued with the teen allegedly punching the constable in the head, causing his head to strike the concrete. He also allegedly kicked the officer and spat in the face of the detective senior constable.

Then, a 17-year-old boy allegedly armed himself with a piece of timber while threatening police, before a crowd of up to ten people gathered in the front yard, further threatening the officers.

Police called for backup, and as the 17-year-old boy was being arrested, a man and woman – both aged 19 – attempted to hinder police by wetting them with a hose.

Additional police arrived and capsicum spray was used to subdue the group.

All six people were apprehended and taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station where charges were laid:

  • The 14-year-old boy was charged with steal motor vehicle, larceny, affray, resist arrest, assault officer in execution of duty, and assault police officer in execution of duty – cause actual bodily harm.
  • The 17-year-old boy was charged with three counts of dishonestly obtain property by deception, resist officer in execution of duty, and armed with intent to commit indictable offence.

They were both refused bail to appear in a children’s court today (Wednesday 12 January 2022).

  • The 18-year-old woman was charged with assault officer in execution of duty (x2), resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, and affray.
  • The 43-year-old man was charged with affray, assault officer in execution of duty, escape police custody, and resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty.
  • The 19-year-old man was charged with affray, resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, and assault officer in execution of duty.

They were refused bail to appear in Wagga Wagga Local Court today (Wednesday 12 January 2022).

  • The 19-year-old woman was charged with resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, and affray. She was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Wagga Wagga Local Court on Wednesday 23 March 2022.

The officers were assessed at the scene for minor injuries, with one sustaining swelling to the face.
