NSW police charge two over spate of malicious damage at Lake Illawarra

A man and a woman have been charged after more than 50 parked cars were allegedly damaged in the Illawarra and South Coast this month.

Between Thursday 16 and Friday 17 July 2020, more than 30 cars parked in the residential areas of Lake Illawarra, Mount Warrigal, Oak Flats, Barrack Heights and Barrack Point had windows and mirrors smashed.

Similar incidents were reported in the Shell Cove, Kiama and Nowra areas on Friday 24 July 2020, with more than 20 cars damaged.

The incidents were reported to police and investigators from Lake Illawarra Police District’s Anti-Theft Unit commenced inquiries.

About 2.15am today (Wednesday 29 July 2020), police responded to reports of car windows being smashed in the Oak Flats area.

An 18-year-old man, two women – aged 19 and 20 – and a 14-year-old boy were located on Shellharbour Road, Warilla.

They were arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.

The Warilla man and 20-year-old Windang woman were both charged with 65 counts of destroy or damage property.

The pair were refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court tomorrow (Thursday 30 July 2020).

The younger woman and teen were released pending further inquiries.
