NSW police investigating after stolen car involved in major crash at Tamworth

An investigation is underway after a stolen vehicle was involved in a major traffic crash in the state’s north east overnight.

Shortly after 10.30pm yesterday (Thursday 13 August 2020), a Toyota Camry was reportedly stolen from the driveway of a home on Willis Street, South Tamworth.

Officers attached to Oxley Police District were notified and commenced a patrol of the area.

Police sighted the Toyota in Kent Street and when it failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated before being terminated shortly after due to safety concerns.

About 11.40pm, police responded to reports of a major vehicle accident on Robert Street in West Tamworth.

Police were told the Toyota was travelling east on Robert Street when it lost control and crashed into the roundabout at Woodward Avenue, before colliding with a power pole, rolling and coming to rest upside-down on a fence.

The male driver was reportedly seen getting out and running from the scene.

Investigations continue.
