Police are reminding snow-goers to take extra care, following a multi-agency response to two missing hikers in the Snowy Mountains.
Police have been told two men, aged 20 and 33, left on Sunday (29 May 2022) with the intention of going for a hike to Rawsons Pass and camping overnight, before summiting Mount Kosciuszko and returning to Thredbo the following day.
As the pair made their return to Thredbo, they became disoriented, before making their way to an emergency shelter at Seamans Hut and staying overnight.
The men were able to contact emergency services, and a multi-agency operation commenced.
About 11.10am yesterday (Tuesday 31 May 2022), the men were located by NSW Police Alpine Operators, with the assistance of NSW Ambulance Service and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.
Both men declined medical assistance and were transported to Thredbo. They were adequately equipped with suitable clothing and shelter, however, were not carrying appropriate safety equipment or a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB).
Monaro Police District Commander, Superintendent John Klepczarek, said the incident is a timely reminder for people to remain vigilant and register their intention with authorities.
“We’ve seen snow start to fall over the past week and we are susceptible to rapid changes in weather across the Snowy Mountains, so it’s really important that people follow necessary precautions and keep friends, family and authorities aware of their intentions,” Supt Klepczarek said.
“Even the most capable hikers can get caught out, so please be mindful of changing weather conditions.
“Plan trips according to your capabilities, notify others where you are going, have a communication plan in place in case of emergency and make sure you have plenty of appropriate clothing and equipment,” Supt Klepczarek said.
NSW Police are also urging hikers visiting the region to ensure their personal safety by submitting a Trip Intention Form and hiring a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) before heading out into the national park.
