NSW police launch investigation into suspicious grassfires at Lake Illawarra

Police are investigating the cause of three large grassfires in the state’s Illawarra region yesterday.

Just after 12.30pm (Monday 19 September 2022), emergency services were called to a park on Robertson Street, Port Kembla, following reports of a grassfire.

Upon arrival, Fire and Rescue NSW officers observed three well-established and separated fires in grassland on Robertson and Hixson Streets.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District – including Highway Patrol officers – assisted with partial evacuations of nearby residents and road closures.

All blazes were extinguished just before 4pm; there are no reports of injuries.

The cause of the fires is yet to be determined; however, they are believed to be linked.

An investigation has commenced by officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District.

Police are treating the fires as suspicious and are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time – including residents with CCTV or dashcam vision – or anyone who noticed suspicious activity, to call Lake Illawarra Police on 4232 5599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
