A Greens Bill to ban toxic “Waste to Energy” Incinerators will be voted on today, 11 Nov 2020, in the NSW Legislative Council.
The Environmental Planning and Assessment Amendment (Prohibition of Waste to Energy Incinerators) Bill 2020, introduced by Greens MP and health and environment spokesperson Cate Faehrmann, will prohibit new waste to energy incineration facilities in NSW that burn industrial waste and plastic for fuel.
It is expected to be debated from around 6pm and can be followed live here.
“It’s gobsmacking that the government would even consider these toxic incinerators at a time when people’s health should be at the centre of all decision making,” said Ms Faehrmann.
“Communities in NSW have been successfully fighting ‘Waste to Energy’ proposals since the 90s but this zombie industry keeps rearing its ugly head, with 4 incinerators currently proposed for Western Sydney, Matraville and Lithgow.
“With Labor indicating in the past that they support a moratorium and Pauline Hanson’s One Nation MP Mark Latham talking a big game for people in the Western Suburbs, this is their chance to put their money where their mouth is and vote to ban this toxic industry once and for all,” said Ms Faehrmann.
